Assignment for Friday, Jan. 20

For Friday's class I'd like you to do two things:

1. In a comment to this post, please introduce yourself to the class. Say a few sentences about where you're from, what your major is, and what you're hoping to learn from this course. Any requests for repertoire?

2. Study Schubert's song "Am Meer," Schwanengesang no. 12. Research translations and write in your own, above the text; and analyze as much as you can with Roman numerals. Be on the lookout for non-chord tones, especially appoggiaturas. I will collect this on Friday.

  2. Hi, I'm Lina, a junior in violin performance from the Chicago Suburbs. I am hoping to come out of this class not only being better versed in the theoretical analysis of music, but also in how to use those skills to be able to play and perform more musically in the future.

  4. Hello everyone, I'm Daniel Edwards, I am a 2nd year DMA student in percussion performance and literature. I claim Utah as my home, although I've lived in several places, among them California, Hawaii, Guatemala, and Argentina. I'm a gemini and I like long walks on the beach... Anyway, I have an interesting relationship with any music written before the 20th century, because hardly any of it has percussion, and the pieces that do have percussion usually have just timpani or simple parts for other percussive instruments. Despite this, I love listening to 19th century music because of the ideals of Romanticism involved (the expression of the self, etc). I sometimes try to play some simple piano works, and transcribe other works on various percussion instruments. Two composers that I would like to look at this semester that aren't on the syllabus are Felix Mendelssohn (songs without words) and Richard Strauss (Don Juan, Don Quixote, and Salome, although that might venture too far into 20th century territory). I'm hoping that I can understand more of the standard forms and theory used in the works we look at this semester, because in my undergrad degree we kind of skimmed late Romantic theory, jumping from Classical to 20th century pretty quickly. I hope to make up what I haven't learned :)

  5. Hi everyone, I'm Zhi Ru Lim, from Malaysia! I'm doing Master in Piano Performance (first year). I anticipate myself to listen to different viewpoint from fellow mates and participate in any constructive discussion. I would also like to learn some fresh theory apart from fundamental theoretical knowledge. By the end of the course, what I hope to acquire is the ability to form convincing and critical analysis/argument on 19th-century music, analyzing in a more in-depth and diverse perspective.

  6. Hello all! I'm Kieryn Williams, a Junior studying Voice Performance. I was born in Ohio and moved to Georgia when I was 6 years old. I've lived there, since. In this class, I am most excited to really fill in the gaps that I left in my previous theory classes, and to finally master the Music Theory concepts that we'll cover. I am also excited to try to hear music in my head when just looking at it. That sounds amazing.

  7. Hello! I'm Andreas, a Viola Performance major from Urbana, Illinois. In this class I am hoping to explore rhetorical structure and gesture in 19th century music, especially their intersectionality with the evolving harmonic language of the time. Brahms' music gives me life, and I'd love to study operas by Verdi and Wagner as well.

  18. My name is Jessica Pearce and I'm a DMA student studying French horn. I've lived in the city of Chicago and grew up in its suburbs. Some of the most gorgeous horn writing (in my opinion) was written in the 19th century, so I am especially looking forward to studying Mahler 2.
